Before you buy – Read this
You should check with your Retailer to see if they have any specific barcoding or packaging requirements before purchasing your barcodes. Regardless of where you purchase barcodes, it is safest to not print your packaging until you have full acceptance of your barcodes and packaging by all of your retailers. If in doubt, you can get a verification report for your barcode image and check that the retailer is happy with this before you print your packaging.
Verification Requirements
Some retail companies in Australia, NZ & USA require the printed barcodes on all products coming into their store to be verified. This is a test scan of the barcode that generates a report showing how easily the barcode image scans.
The companies that we are aware of that probably require barcode verification are in Australia and New Zealand – Coles Australia, Woolworths Australia, Foodstuffs NZ, Bunnings and Placemakers NZ.
We can provide barcode verification reports performed by a GS1-accredited verification company – as far as we know, these reports are acceptable to all companies in Australia and NZ except Woolworths Australia.
We are only aware of one other company in Australia and NZ with specific barcode requirements – Super Retail Group (Australia & NZ) will only accept barcode numbers that have been purchased directly from GS1.
SO – as far as we are aware, our barcodes are accepted by all retailers in Australia & New Zealand except
- Woolworths Australia
- Super Retail Group
(this is current – We will update this immediately if we become aware of any other restrictions).
If you are looking at selling your product internationally, also note that Kroger’s & WalMart in the United States have chosen to only accept GS1 barcodes. We are not aware of any other restrictions in the States or worldwide.
If you are unsure about the specific requirements of the companies you will be supplying your products to, check with them to determine their specific labeling requirements before you purchase your barcodes or print your packaging.
If you require a barcode verification report for your product, we can arrange it through an independent GS1-certified verification company. Our barcode numbers will pass this verification test, if they are printed correctly. Look here for more details.
